A $1.4 million laser detection system has been installed on Glenridge Road in Glenville to warn oversized trucks about the low bridge ahead. Over the years, a number of large trucks and tractor trailers have been maimed trying to make it under the bridge, which only clears 10'-11".
With authorities on hand, as well as Glenville's Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle, CBS 6 tested the system with one of their satellite trucks - clearly too big to fit under the bridge. The warning system worked, alerting the driver to turn around and not approach the bridge.
A few minutes later, as Greg Floyd was interviewing the Supervisor, a bus coming down the road was alerted that it was too high to pass through, yet it went for it. Luckily for the driver and those surrounding the bridge, the bus just barely fit.
So is it working? Supervisor Koetzle says he's received at least four calls from people observing oversized vehicles turning around. Still, even with all the warning signs and signals, the bridge was struck at least once after the system was installed around Labor Day.
