New York State Police will be working to prevent pranks on roadways
As Halloween approaches, New York State Police are enhancing their efforts to prevent dangerous pranks on the state's roadways with the 50th Annual Pumpkin Patrol on October 30 and 31. This initiative aims to deter hazardous activities, such as throwing objects from overpasses onto the Thruway, and involves collaboration between State Police Troop T and local amateur radio volunteers. Hundreds of participants across 16 counties will monitor bridges and overpasses to quickly report any unsafe behavior to law enforcement. The Pumpkin Patrol, which began as a volunteer effort in 1976, has been coordinated by State Police since 1990 as part of broader crime-prevention strategies. The initiative coincides with increased patrols targeting impaired driving and underage drinking during the Halloween weekend.
