20 Outstanding Women!
We found the women who go above and beyond to make their communities a better place to live. Those unsung heroes in our neighborhoods – the ones who are already busy, yet find the time to give back in big ways to help others.

Today's Outstanding Woman is,
Mary Lauria of Schenectady
In the predawn hours, when most of the world is still asleep and winter temperatures plunge well below zero, Mary is already out meeting people where they are, offering whatever they need, and reminding them that they matter. As the leader of the street outreach program at Bethesda House in Schenectady, Mary has built a reputation that extends far beyond the walls of any building. Among the unhoused members of her community, she is known simply by name and that name carries with it the promise of compassion, reliability, and genuine care.
Mary's work defies easy description. On any given day, she may be securing donations from community partners to ensure clients have access to essential supplies, delivering a warm meal or a pair of gloves to someone in need, or simply offering a listening ear to someone who has rarely experienced being truly heard. Community members recognize her while she is out driving and do not hesitate to flag her down confident that she will do everything within her power to help. That level of trust is not given freely; it is earned, day after day, through consistent and selfless action.
What distinguishes Mary most profoundly is her commitment to seeing her clients as whole human beings. She takes the time to build genuine relationships, ensuring that every person she encounters feels valued, respected, and seen experiences that many in her community are far too rarely afforded.
Mary does not wait for people to come to her. She goes to them before sunrise, in the harshest conditions, without hesitation. Her unwavering dedication is not just admirable; it is transformative.
Nominated by Laurelle Chavarria, Liz Del Vecchio and Christina Foreman
