Albany-area store closings are part of a national shutdown.

Rite Aid is closing all 178 of its New York stores—including 11 locations in the Capital Region—as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan. The drugstore chain, once a major pharmacy retailer, is selling off all assets following years of financial losses and growing competition.

Affected stores include locations in Albany, Colonie, Troy, Halfmoon, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, Amsterdam and Gloversville.

Starting June 5, stores will no longer accept returns, gift cards, or exchanges. Rite Aid rewards points and BonusCash are also being phased out.

Employees were told they’ll be laid off starting June 4, with some remaining temporarily. Rite Aid has not disclosed the number of local job losses.

This wave of Albany NY store closings adds to a national trend of retail and pharmacy cutbacks, also seen with CVS, Walgreens, and other chains.
