Macy's Closing Five Locations: What Does This Mean For The Capital Region Locations?

Reuters

Will any of the Capital Region locations be closing?

Macy's made the announcement late last week that they are planning on closing 5 of their stores while also laying off around 2.350 employees at the retail and corporate levels.

Like many other brick-and-mortar retail stores, Macy's is facing the challenge of online shopping cutting into consumers. Amazon and other online retail websites have become the go to for most people when it comes to their shopping needs.

Fortunately none of the Macy's locations in The Capital Region will be closing, at least not at the moment.

Those store are -

  • Bayfair Center, San Leandro, California
  • Simi Valley Town Center, Simi Valley, California
  • Governor’s Square, Tallahassee, Florida
  • Kukui Grove Center, Lihue, Hawaii
  • Ballston Quarter, Arlington, Virginia

Coming along with the closing of those locations is also the layoffs that were mentioned earlier. Macy's has roughly 94,000 employees, at least according to reports from 2023. The 2,350 employees that will be laid off this month means that Macy's is cutting it's work force by 3.5%. While that doesn't seem like a very large percentage, try tell that to the people that are losing their jobs. Macy's says that the laid off employees last day will be January 26th.

Let's hope that in the future the stores here in The Capital Region, Crossgates and Colonie Center, will remain operational.
