The lot will be closing September 9

Drivers picking up passengers at Albany International Airport will need to use a temporary Cell Phone Lot starting next week as the airport begins an expansion project.

The current 32-space lot will close Wednesday, Sept. 9, to make way for an expansion that will increase its capacity to 67 spaces. The airport expects the larger lot to reopen in early November, ahead of the Thanksgiving and holiday travel season.

The Cell Phone Lot gives drivers a free place to wait for arriving passengers without having to circle the airport or pull up to the terminal. It has also become a popular spot for people who come to watch planes take off and land.

The need for additional space comes as passenger traffic at Albany International Airport continues to grow. The airport set a passenger record in 2025, and traffic this year is on pace to exceed that record.

Temporary Cell Phone Lot

During construction, drivers will be directed to a temporary Cell Phone Lot in an employee parking area at the corner of Heritage Lane and Albany Shaker Road. Signs will be posted to help drivers find the temporary location.

Drivers can also wait in the airport's paid parking lots and garages. The first hour is free, providing another option for those picking up passengers.

The airport expects the expanded Cell Phone Lot to reopen in early November and plans to provide an update once the project is complete.

One important reminder for drivers: overnight parking is not allowed in either the regular or temporary Cell Phone Lot. Unattended vehicles may be towed at the owner's expense.
